learn to woodwork

begin your woodworking journey

Learning to woodwork is a lifelong journey that changes the way you see the world.

Woodworking is as much about building things with this beautiful natural media as it is about slowing down and connecting with yourself.

Our core woodworking classes create a path to practicing woodworking at your own pace and in your own way. We’ll step through every step of the learning journey together — workbenches, clamps and vises, squares, saws, chisels, braces, hand planes and more.

core woodworking classes

Learn everything you need to begin your woodworking journey:
core skills, hand tools, power tools, project design, joinery, and assembly.

Beginner Woodshop

A fun, approachable one-night intro to hand tool woodworking.

Get a taste of magic of the craft and its core tools as you saw, chisel, plane, and carve wood on our classic workbenches.

Foundations I

Foundations I is about learning how to woodwork.

This 5 session course covers core aspects of woodworking: wood as a design material and near-endless possibilities, core hand tools, basic joinery, surface detailing, finishing, and of course – the mindset of the process.

Learn to woodwork and develop a knowledge of the craft. This class is the gateway to continued learning via Foundations II, access to our open woodshop via Membership, and to our slate of project classes.

Foundations II

Foundations II is about learning how to design and build.

Gain confidence in the woodshop and self-sufficiency with project design and planning, stock preparation, power tools, glue-ups, joinery with fasteners, and finishing.

This 5 session course stands on the skills developed in Foundations I, continuing the journey by introducing students to more advanced methods of woodworking while expanding a base of woodworking skill, and applying it all with a storage bench project.

Foundations of Power Tools

Learn to use a table saw, miter saw, and drill as we build a project from scratch.

Power tools let us quickly dimension stock, make precise alterations, and build efficiently. While a holistic woodworking practice often begins with hand tools, comfort with power tools is foundational to almost any project.

This class builds a grounded, respectful understanding of how to use power tools safely to yield precision and efficiency.

Carving & Sculpting

Carving is the meditative process of shaping, sculpting, or adding texture, engravings, and patterns to wood. It’s a means of slowing down to connect with the material through a celebration of grain and form.

Learn tools and carving techniques in our 2-part Beginner Wood Carving class.

‘Do It’ Skills Classes

Learn the skills to be more self-sufficient in your home with our ‘do it’ classes:

Light it! — learn to wire, solder and build a wooden lamp using basic electrical circuitry

Hang it! — learn how to use a drill and mounting hardware to hang things on the wall (studs or drywall)

Project Classes

Learn to woodwork by making beautiful objects.

While many project classes span 4-6 weeks and require Foundations I as a prerequisite, we offer some beginner-friendly 1-night smaller project classes, too.
