woodworking foundations II

learn how to design, plan, and build a woodworking project

Class Overview: Foundations II

Foundations II is designed as a next step on your woodworking journey after Foundations I.

Whereas Foundations I is about learning the fundamentals of woodworking — from the shop to the material to the tools — Foundations II is about learning to build, introducing the skills necessary to design, plan, and create a complex project: in this case, a custom storage bench.

Over the course of five weeks, we’ll cover everything from project planning and the development of a cut list, to stock prep and surfacing, glue-ups, joinery, fasteners and hardware, and finishing, making use of a wide assortment of tools and skills.

This class brings power tools into the mix, incorporating the table saw, miter saw, and drills on top of the foundational hand tools learned in Foundations I to help round out a comprehensive set of shop skills.

In our experience, Foundations II is where new woodworkers begin to really grow — thinking critically about stock sequencing, gaining comfort and familiarity with the shop and the tools, developing skill and deepening intuition.

Plus, students often see familiar faces from Foundations I, making FII a fun environment for friendships and community in the shop.
